Description: | This image, made by Ben McKinley (Curtin University, Australia), made it to the cover of the latest issue of Nature Astronomy. It shows our nearest neighbouring radio galaxy, Centaurus A, observed at 185 MHz by the Murchison Widefield Array. This spectacular source has giant radio lobes extending 8 degrees across the sky — powered by the supermassive black hole located close to the image centre. This image is not only astronomically impressive, it also makes use of novel imaging techniques... developed by ASTRON! Deconvolving such a complicated image requires state-of-the-art cleaning algorithms. McKinley used WSClean and Image Domain Gridding, developed by Bas van der Tol, Bram Veenboer and André Offringa, to do this. Arxiv link: https://arxiv.org/abs/2111.02683 |
