Original ASTRON typewriter from 1956

Submitter: Tammo Jan Dijkema
Description: One of the first ASTRON typewriters is still there! This typewriter, an Adler Universal (serial number 1030639) is still in the building, currently in the dark room used for processing photos and PCBs.

This particular serial number is from 1956, so it is probably one of the first typewriters that ASTRON - founded in 1949 as SRZM - purchased in Dwingeloo. It would not surprise me if the first annual reports were typed on this very machine. Besides the Dwingeloo telescope, it may be one of the oldest instrument ASTRON still has.

I recently visited one of the last Dutch typewriter mechanics, and brought along the ASTRON Adler. After thorough investigation, the mechanic told me, that unfortunately this typewriter is beyond repair ("geen eer meer aan te behalen"). Some parts of the machine still work though, it is still possible to type a few words on it.

While I don't know the full story of this typewriter, I think we should keep it for historical purposes.
