Description: | On February 25th, CAMRAS participated in the "Landelijke Sterrenkijkdagen" (National Star Gazing Days) organized by KNVWS. Some 130 visitors visited the Dwingeloo radio telescope in the evening and enjoyed a program of both radio and optical stargazing. Because the front-end of the radio telescope is currently down for maintenance, we could not offer a live demonstration in the telescope. We could show some recordings. Of course, even without a feed, the telescope can still slew, which is always one of the highlights of a tour. Specially the younger visitors were very enthusiastic about this bit. Apart from the tours in the radio telescope, we could offer the visitors a view through one of five optical telescopes (each pointed to a nice celestial object like the moons of Jupiter, the Pleiades, the Andromeda nebula, the Moon, etc.). Also, to compensate the lack of a live signal in the big dish, we set up a 1.5m dish to show a hydrogen line. Another live demonstration was the reception of meteor reflections. Thanks to the clear skies, and the effort of the CAMRAS volunteer involved, the star gazing night was a big success. |
