Choco-bursts!

Submitter: Jason Hessels
Description: Back in 2018, UvA/ASTRON postdoc Anne Archibald prepared some 3D printable files to visualise some of our Arecibo data on the first-known repeating fast radio burst (FRB) source, FRB 121102. These are available to download on Thingiverse and were published in a more scientific manner in Hessels et al. (2019).

Now in 2023, these data have finally realised their true potential.

Using a combination of 3D printing and silicon moulds, Daniela Huppenkothen (SRON) has created chocolate FRBs. Here she is in my office in Amsterdam, surprising me with one of the first batches. For the uninitiated, these statuettes show how bright the burst is as a function of time and radio wavelength (a so-called `dynamic spectrum'). Each detail of these sweet FRBs is visible, including the time-frequency labelling on the sides.

I don't yet know how an FRB tastes; I'm saving them for a special occasion.
