Astron/Kapteyn student Pranav Kukreti successfully defended his thesis

Submitter: Raffaella Morganti
Description: On 10 October 2023, Pranav Kukreti successfully defended his thesis at the University of Groningen entitled 'From birth to maturity: tracing the evolution and impact of radio galaxies'. Pranav's PhD was a shared ASTRON & Kapteyn Institute project. For his PhD project, Pranav was supervised by Raffaella Morganti and Tom Oosterloo, with great help from Tim Shimwell and Leah Morabito who provided extra support and guidance.

Pranav's project was aimed at quantifying the connection between the evolution of the radio jets and their impact on the surrounding galactic medium. Pranav has addressed this in different ways, from the detailed studies of single objects using multi-frequency and multi-resolution observations, to statistical work where many thousands of objects were used and their properties studied via stacking techniques.

Two of the thesis chapters have made use of images using LOFAR international baselines (produced while helping with the commissioning of the IB pipeline), while for the study of a spectacular galaxy merger, the combination Apertif and LOFAR was used to trace the properties of the radio plasma.

The pdf of Pranav's thesis can be found here https://research.rug.nl/nl/publications/from-birth-to-maturity-tracing-the-evolution-and-impact-of-radio-

Pranav has now started a postDoc in Heidelberg where he will continue his work on active galactic nuclei using observations from the James Webb Space Telescope, hopefully combining them with radio data.

Congratulations Pranav! Good luck with your new position and we wish you many more exciting results!
