Co-workers to be extra proud of

Submitter: Mischa Brendel
Description: During the new year’s reception, ASTRON director Jessica Dempsey took a moment to hand out several awards to employees who have made themselves stand out in a positive way. There was some fierce competition, but eventually management was able to select four winners.

The Unsung Heroes Award went to Alex Benjamins, a member of the – also greatly appreciated – facilities team. The entire team, but especially Alex stood out in their work in the renovation of our building. Alex went beyond the call of duty to make sure that inconveniences for everyone working at ASTRON were – and are – kept to a minimum, while working hard to make the renovation of the ASTRON building a success.

The Daily Image Award was not won by an individual, but by an entire team. Team Rhaptor received the prestigious award for the first release of the Rhaptor pipeline (daily image of June 9th, 2023). The release of this image is a feat in itself, but it also means that in the future, LOFAR users can directly request the high-quality images from Rapthor when proposing observations.

The Outreach Award went to David Prinsloo. Although not an astronomer himself, David represented ASTRON at several astronomy conferences, where he staffed our booth, talked to everyone interested in ASTRON and LOFAR, and was a perfect host.

The Collaboration Catalyst Award – a new award – went to Paula Fusiara for her leadership role in the vibrant workspace programme. Inspired by the famous ‘Google’ office space with a vibrant atmosphere, Paula – together with a team – has set out to turn ASTRON in a more vibrant workplace, a save space that everyone goes to with pleasure, a place that makes you smile and gives out positive vibes.

We congratulate all the winners and are immensely proud that they our part of the ASTRON family! We would also like to thank Tin-Art, the company that handcrafted the awards.
