ILT visit DE601 Effelsberg

Submitter: Ronald
Description: From Monday 5th to Wednesday 7th February the Maintenance team visited station DE601 in Effelsberg, Germany to find a solution for re-occurring power outages.

We kept replacing SPU boards over there, so it was time to pay a visit and see if we could find a solution.

In preparation Lute van de Bult build a custom breakout board, so we were able to measure internal currents. And we brought quite some spare parts, because it was impossible to determine a cause from office.
At location we checked internal current flow in the cabinet and didn’t find deviating values. Next we measured current flow to the antennas and found that circuit was badly overloaded.
We discovered that the cause was again related to the flooding which took place in 2021. Many cables were heavily corroded and we had to write off 9 further LBA antennas. Other LBA’s we were able to repair.

Leysan Mulder and Yvonne Dijk joined us this time for their first ILT visit.
They did a really great job, going through a lot of cable measurements with the TDR (time-domain reflectometer). And replacing bad frontends.
After repairs the power outages are solved.

Currently we are working on another problem with failing image loading at the RSP boards. At location we found many old boards dating from 2006 (18 years old), so we are in the process of replacing those.
After that, we expect the station will be performing well again.

Thank you very much to Olaf Wucknitz and Menno Norden for your support in this operation.

It was quite some effort and we needed all the time available over there, but we look back with satisfaction on our first ILT visit this year.
