Data Intensive Astronomy Centres in the Netherlands

Submitter: John Swinbank
Description: At ASTRON, we're busy gearing up for LOFAR2.0 — which will make the telescope even more data-intensive than it is now — and preparing for the exabyte-per-year data avalanche expected from the SKA in the second half of this decade. We're pondering difficult questions about how we can best utilize scarce compute resources, how we can preserve massive datasets for posterity, and how we can support our user community in engaging with facilities of this scale.

But, of course, we're not alone: as well as LOFAR and SKA, the Netherlands plays a major role in a many data intensive astronomy facilities. We saw this as a great opportunity to compare notes, look for common themes, and discuss
possibilities for cooperation.

On 12 March, therefore, we welcomed folks representing ALMA, Euclid, Gaia, JIVE, JWST, LOFAR, and SKA to ASTRON for a one-day workshop. We heard a range of thought-provoking talks (with special thanks to Roberto Pizzo, Gijs Verdoes Kleijn, Violette Impellizzeri, and Ilse van Bemmel) and took part in structured discussion sessions to help develop our plans for future work.

By the end of the day everybody had a bunch of new ideas and projects they wanted to try, and were busily making plans for a follow up meeting later this year.
