| Description: | On October 6th, together with JIVE, SRON, and CAMRAS, ASTRON opened the doors to the public for the annual Weekend van de Wetenschap (Science Weekend). After months of careful preparations, over a hundred volunteers were prepared to receive the many curious guests. From noon, those guests got to enjoy presentations, market stands, experiments, workshops, and tours with subjects that dove into both the technical and astronomical aspects of what we do in Dwingeloo. Among the many, many activities were soldering, crafting your own pulsar, placing Lego telescopes, designing paper airplanes, and launching miniature rockets. There was plenty to do and children were very busy with collecting their stamps; if they collected enough, they could retrieve a present. We closed our doors at 4 PM, after which all the volunteers immediately started cleaning up. With so many helping out, that was done fairly quickly, after which it was time for… PIZZA! Together we enjoyed quite a few slices of it. It was a very crowded day, but thanks to the tireless effort of all our coworkers, it was a very successful day as well. We hope that we have informed and entertained the audience, and perhaps even sparked the spirit of some of our younger visitors. |
