Summer student project: Le Hoang Long

Submitter: Le Hoang Long (w/ Henrik Edler, Cristina Cordun & Joe Callingham)
Description: Hi everyone! My name is Long, I come from Vietnam, and I’m a master’s student in the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master program – MASS. This year, I had the opportunity to join the ASTRON/JIVE Summer Program, where I’ve been working with LOFAR LBA Sky Survey (LoLSS) data to search for exotic circularly polarized sources.

The first image above shows the Stokes V image from LoLSS of one of our test fields. Our pipeline has been successful, and we’re now scaling it up to cover the entire LoLSS survey, which spans nearly 2,000 fields across the northern sky above 24°. In this test field, we were able to re-detect the pulsar PSR J1816+4510 with a significance of >25σ.

The animation below highlights another fascinating property of this pulsar—it is an eclipsing pulsar (Polzin et al. 2020). With the help of Cees Bassa, we identified the exact moment of eclipse and created snapshots that capture the event in both Stokes I and Stokes V.

Beyond the research, I’ve truly enjoyed immersing myself in the welcoming and collaborative environment at ASTRON. I am deeply grateful to my supervisors and colleagues for this wonderful opportunity, and I hope to return to ASTRON in the future.
