Description: | This is the latest of our continuing series of LOFAR CS1 images. In the previous image, made with the Lowband Antennas (LBA), Cas A and Cyg A were subtracted to reveal several hundred fainter sources. However, the sidelobes of the three next brightest sources, Tycho, Taurus A and Virgo A, still contaminated the residual image. In this new image, this contamination, and thus the residual noise level, has been reduced quite significantly by 'peeling off' these three sources as well. Note that their sidelobes extend over the entire sky. For comparison, the image is shown before and after peeling. Now the brightest object is the Sun, in the bottom right hand corner. About 10 subbands were used, each with a bandwidth of 0.16 MHz, with the centre frequency around 45 MHz. The integration time is 24 hours. No beam correction has been applied to this image. |
