A Party for Richard Strom!

Submitter: Raffaella Morganti
Description: Richard Strom was one of the first astronomers at ASTRON and has been part of this institute for more than 35 years. This year was Richard’s 65th birthday and officially he retired. Of course, we could not let this pass unnoticed!

A “Stromfest” was organised on 1-2 October 15, 2009, focusing on the many astronomical topics Richard worked on. Many distinguished guests - friends and collaborators of Richard - travelled from far away to attend this event! Among them also Richard’s family, including his mother who also followed some of the talks.

The friendly and informal gathering actually started before the “official” programme, with a visit to the LOFAR core near Exloo and the Embrace station in Westerbork. The scientific programme focused on History of Radio Astronomy, Ancient SNe, Supernova Remnants and GRB's, Pulsars and Instrumentation, Polarization and Radio Galaxies and also Future Telescopes as Richard has been very much involved in the FAST and Embrace projects.

Although comets have not been a topic of his research, “the making of a comet” has certainly been a very successful show that Richard has performed in almost every ASTRON OpenDay and other outreach events. A success among the children, and not only them! A short film was played in which Richard shows his unexpected quality of show-man, "Hurling his Harbingers through the Heavens".

A nice dinner was organised on Thursday evening. The guests enjoyed not only the good food, but also the music played by the harpist Nienke van Leijden, the partner of Michiel Brentjens. The workshop closed with a presentation of Richard and a party for the entire institute.
