| Description: | In November last year, Alicia Berciano Alba successfully defended her PhD thesis at the University of Groningen! Many of you will have come into contact with Alicia over the last few years. The images above show Alicia with two of her promoters - Leon Koopmans & Mike Garrett (unfortunately Ger de Bruyn is not present in the images), her paranymph - Olaf Wucknitz (formerly of JIVE and still a frequent visitor to Dwingeloo) and Alicia's family and friends. Alicia received a lot of help from other experts in Dwingeloo, including Tom Oosterloo (a member of the thesis opposition committee), Andy Biggs (now at ESO), Cormac Reynolds (now at Curtin Univ. of Technology), Mike Sipior, and members of the Opt/IR group, in particular Ton Schoenmaker (recently retired). There are few people that would schedule (i) their PhD defence, (ii) their own marriage (to Edo Loenen also pictured above) and (iii) moving home from Groningen to Leiden all in the same week - but Alicia is one of them! We understand everything has gone well and Alicia & Edo are settling well into life in Leiden and at the Sterrewacht. Their pet bird, previously also a frequent visitor to ASTRON (see http://www.astron.nl/dailyimage/main.php?date=20080624) is doing well too! |
