Open Day at the HIT

Submitter: Ronald de Wild
Description: Recently, the new Hanze Institute of Technology (HIT) in Assen celebrated its annual Open Day, which attracted many well-wishers and potential students. The HIT is the first institute of higher education in Assen, and one of the few institutes in the world that specializes in Sensor Technology.

The HIT endeavours to have strong ties with high-tech organisations like NAM, Sun Micro Systems, ASTRON and others. Apart from being prospective employers for HIT graduates, they make valuable contributions in the form of equipment or part-time teachers. ASTRON does both.

The image shows the antennas of a "mini-LOFAR" installation on the roof. It is operated by the students, who do all kinds of experiments with it. The inset on the right shows them explaining the details of the output to Open Day visitors. The inset on the left shows Ronald de Wild of ASTRON, who teaches one of the eight major themes that make up the first two years of the HIT curriculum.
