3D Print Kompas

ASTRON is part of the 3D Print Kompas project consortium, consisting of research institutes, industry partners, and regional organisations collaborating to advance additive manufacturing technologies and accelerate their adoption in real-world applications.

Within the project, ASTRON investigates how 3D printing can enable new approaches to radio astronomy instrumentation. The work focuses on lightweight and geometrically complex structures, including antennas, electronic packaging, and mechanical components that can benefit from the design freedom offered by additive manufacturing.

About the project

3D Print Kompas brings together expertise, infrastructure, and application development in advanced manufacturing technologies across Northern Netherlands. The project aims to increase knowledge and practical adoption of 3D printing and 3D electronics by connecting research organisations, industry, and education partners.

A key objective is to develop and share capabilities across multiple manufacturing domains, including metal printing, polymers and composites, glass printing, electronics integration, and design methodologies. Through collaboration and access to shared facilities, the project supports the creation of innovative products, faster development cycles, and more sustainable production approaches.

By combining knowledge development with practical applications, 3D Print Kompas contributes to building a regional ecosystem for advanced manufacturing and strengthening innovation capacity for future technologies.
